STEP 1 Hand-washing
A symbolic washing of body and heart before the ceremony begins — entering a new chapter with a clean, open spirit.

STEP 2 Drawing a fortune
Each slip carries a wish from the family — every fortune drawn is a blessing for the child's future.

STEP 3 Touching the scallion gate
In Chinese, "scallion" (cōng) sounds like "smart" (cōng) — a wish for a sharp mind and great learning.

STEP 4 Carrying the issho-mochi
From an old Japanese rite — "issho" (one shō of rice) sounds like "isshō" (a lifetime), wishing the child a lifetime of plenty and good health.

Standing on the rice cake — wishing the child the strength to walk forward, grounded and steady.
